History

All the Elektrėnai citizens of the time can remember that happy 19th of April in 1962, when newspapers announced that:
"The new settlement in Vievis district next to the construction site of the Lithuanian Central Steam Power Station is to be called Elektrėnai."
Exactly 38 years after the christening of the nameless settlement, on the 19th of March 2000, the city was granted municipality rights and became the centre of Elektrėnai Municipality. The municipality consists of the 8 neighbourhoods of Beižionys, Eektrėnai, Gilučiai, Kazokiškės, Kietaviškės, Pastrėvys, Semeliškės and Vievis. Altogether thirty two thousand people line in this 55 thousand hectare area.
